If approached by an intruder and unable to flee, a skunk will usually fluff its fur, shake its tail, stamp the ground with its front feet, growl, stand on its hind legs, turn its head and spit to scare the potential attacker. Skunks rarely attack unless cornered or defending their young. ![]() The skunk’s chief enemies are automobiles and great horned owls, both of which kill skunks in large numbers. An estimated 70 percent of a skunk’s diet consists of insects considered harmful to humans. Being carrion eaters, they help keep roadways and neighborhoods clean. Their diet includes black widow spiders and scorpions. They also dig for insects, especially beetles, larvae, and earthworms. They often travel five to ten miles within their territory at night looking for field mice and other small rodents as well as lizards, frogs, birds, eggs, garbage, acorns, and fallen fruit. Skunks are omnivorous and help keep the rodent population in check. If a skunk does not find enough food during the night, it will foraged during daylight hours as well. Skunks are generally nocturnal and begin foraging at sunset. They like warm, dry, dark, and defensible areas most house basements and crawl spaces qualify. They are capable of burrowing a den a foot or so underground, with well-hidden entrances. In urban territories, skunks den beneath buildings, decks, dumps, and woodpiles. They are hardly ever found more than two miles from a water source. Skunks tend to den in shallow burrows or hollow logs. The larvae and adults feature in dishes like hebo-Gohan, consisting of steamed rice, young, soft nymph, or grilled kabobs of fully-grown hornets served whole.Skunks are members of the weasel family (Mustelidae). In parts of Asia, including China, Taiwan, and Japan, hornets were once a protein-rich culinary ingredient in rural communities. HumansĪn interesting addition to the list of what eats hornets is humans. One of their favorite foods is ground hornet larva, but they’ll make quick work of any variety of underground insect broods, completely destroying the nest in the process. Their bodies are built for digging, with short, sturdy legs, long talons, and webbed back feet to make quick work of soil. American BadgerĪmerican badgers are nocturnal, carnivorous relatives of skunks that live across Canada, the United States, and Mexico. Other species of bears also eat insects, including hornets. While they’re happy to munch on the adults that may get in the way, they are indeed after the juicy grubs. To get to hornets’ nests, black bears claw their way up tree branches, where they rip away the outer layers of “paper” to get to the comb inside. ![]() They are particularly fond of bald-faced and European hornets, which occupy the same North American forests where black bears live. Black Bearsĭespite their bad reputation as honey fanatics, black bears mainly feast on vegetables, fruit, nuts, seeds, and insects. Once stunned, this airborne behemoth injects an enzyme solution into the hornet’s body and drinks out the dissolved organs. They use this talent to smack into the sides of their prey, stunning the insect instantly. In addition to large, hook-like feet for wrangling hornets, red-footed cannibal flies also have a muscular thorax that allows them to reach incredibly high speeds. ![]()
